While watching this video i was wondering why I liked the movie so much, I've seen it like 4 times and really loved it, and I believe its because I can relate with Jojo in some way? when I was a kid I really looked up at my father, and he's really, really into the bible, and he taught me things like gays are mentally ill and god doesn't like the mixing of races, and so I grew up repeating that stuff, until I moved to a new school and stopped being with my dad so often, I made friends with people my dad taught me were bad, I started questioning what I should believe in, and I realized everything my dad taught me was really fucked up, and so I could come with terms with the fact that im bi, and to love myself, and that I don't need his validation to be happy so yeah, I think that's why this movie hit me as hard as it did, and im happy that this movie exists.

Mackenzie said in an interview about this movie something along the lines of “there are a lot of wwii movies that act like the audience doesnt know who the nazis were, so those movies teach you. jojo rabbit understands that you know who the nazis were, so it makes fun of them rather than teaching the audience about wwii.” and i thought that is super important to understand about this movie. (also just to make it clear thats not a quote from her specifically thats just the gist of what i remember mackenzie saying.

Wow. What a humanizing and humbling film. It is unfortunate but understable why some reviewers will rate it poorly. I had the privilege of growing up around families affected by the Holocaust but no parent ever told us how bad things were. It was not till we were much older that I learned my friends parents couldnt talk about the Holocaust without sheer rage, horror and sorrow. For those reviewers that believe that the Holocaust and Nazi Germany should be depicted with abject seriousness you are justified but please hear me out. If this film had been released when I was a kid, maybe I would have understood earlier something about those things too horrible for parents to say. It has always been important to tell younger generations about the worst thing we have ever have done as a species, and I believe this film honors that tradition.

The fact that Roman (JoJo) kept a straight face the entire time is astounding.
